What is SQL Anywhere Web Edition?

SQL Anywhere Web Edition is a free version of SQL Anywhere available for the development and deployment of web applications using Java, ASP.NET, PHP, and more. The SQL Anywhere Web Edition may only be used for web browser applications.

How can I get a copy of SQL Anywhere Web Edition?

SQL Anywhere Web Edition is available for download from the Sybase.com web site. A direct link to the download is available here: http://sybase.com/sawe.

Is there a forum for asking questions and sharing ideas related to the SQL Anywhere Web Editon software?

Yes, the SQL Anywhere Web Edition forum can be accessed here: http://groups.google.com/group/sql-anywhere-web-development

Additionally, there is a Blog called "Peering Behind the Browser" hosted by our own Eric Farrar, that discusses topics related to Web application development that is available here http://iablog.sybase.com/efarrar/

Are there any restrictions on scalability or performance of the SQL Anywhere Web Edition compared to a paid SQL Anywhere license?

No. The SQL Anywhere Web Edition can take advantage of the full power of the computer and SQL Anywhere. There are no restrictions on database size, cache size, CPUs, optimization techniques, execution strategies, or SQL language support. The SQL Anywhere Web Edition has the same excellent performance out of the box that has always been a hallmark of SQL Anywhere.

How can I get technical support for the SQL Anywhere Web Edition?

All existing SQL Anywhere support mechanisms are available for the SQL Anywhere Web Edition.

Is the SQL Anywhere Web Edition fully tested?

The SQL Anywhere Web Edition is subjected to the same rigorous testing as paid versions of SQL Anywhere. It is exactly the same software as paid versions, but is restricted by license.

Can I download and install SQL Anywhere Maintenance Releases and Bug Fixes from the Sybase web site?

Yes.

Does the SQL Anywhere Web Edition release schedule lag behind the release schedule for paid version of SQL Anywhere?

No.

What platforms does the SQL Anywhere Web Edition run on?

Windows, Linux and Mac OS X on Intel.

Which data access APIs are available in the SQL Anywhere Web Edition?

  • The SQL Anywhere .NET data provider.
  • The SQL Anywhere PHP API.
  • The iAnywhere JDBC driver.
  • The SQL Anywhere Perl API.
  • The SQL Anywhere Python API.
  • The SQL Anywhere Ruby API.
  • SQL Anywhere web services.

Can I set up a development or testing server to parallel my production system?

You should have one license for each physical server where you run the SQL Anywhere Web Edition.

Can I use the SQL Anywhere Web Edition on a developer’s machine?

You should have a SQL Anywhere Developer Edition license or Web Edition license for each developer machine. Like the SQL Anywhere Web Edition, the SQL Anywhere Developer Edition is available no charge.

What about administration and maintenance tasks?

The SQL Anywhere Web Edition includes a comprehensive set of powerful tools and utilities for administration and maintenance. The SQL Anywhere Web Edition is not limited to web browser applications for administration tasks, maintenance tasks, or data import/export tasks. However, the primary purpose for SQL Anywhere must be to support interactive web browser applications.

Can I migrate easily from the SQL Anywhere Web Edition to a paid SQL Anywhere license?

Yes. The SQL Anywhere Web Edition is a subset of SQL Anywhere. Any SQL Anywhere Web Edition applications will run unchanged and unaffected after switching to a paid SQL Anywhere license.

What is the added value of a paid SQL Anywhere Server License compared to the free SQL Anywhere Web Edition?

The SQL Anywhere Web Edition permits web browser applications while a paid SQL Anywhere Server License permits all types of applications. Also, the paid SQL Anywhere Server license includes features not available in the SQL Anywhere Web Edition.

Can I use UltraLite with the Web Edition?

You can use UltraLite as a browser-local database within your applications. In other words, you can use UltraLite as part of a browser plug-in to provide a local database for your browser applications. You will need a paid version of UltraLite to deploy it in any other way.

Can I use MobiLink synchronization with the Web Edition?

You can use MobiLink to synchronize UltraLite browser-local databases to any SQL Anywhere or MySQL consolidated database. You will need a paid license to deploy MobiLink in any other way. With a paid license, MobiLink can be used to synchronize any SQL Anywhere or UltraLite databases with SQL Anywhere, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, or Sybase ASE.

What extra MobiLink features and options are available with a paid license and not available in the SQL Anywhere Web Edition?

You will need a paid license to use MobiLink direct row handling, a feature for synchronizing to non-relational enterprise application servers. You will also need a paid license for MobiLink High Availability, an option for out-of-the-box clustering support of MobiLink server farms.

Can I use the SQL Anywhere internal HTTP server?

Yes, but the purpose of the SQL Anywhere Server must be to support interactive web browser applications and all access to the SQL Anywhere Server must be from a web browser, except for administration and maintenance. The SQL Anywhere Server can be running on the same computer as the web browser or on a different computer.

Can I use QAnywhere with the Web Edition?

No. You will need a paid license to deploy QAnywhere application-to-application messaging.

What extra SQL Anywhere features and options are available with a SQL Anywhere paid license and not available in the SQL Anywhere Web Edition?

  • SQL Remote data replication can be used to replicate SQL Anywhere databases with a SQL Anywhere Server.
  • Remote data access allows access to tables in other data sources from within SQL Anywhere.
  • External stored procedures allow you to implement database stored procedures in C++, Java, or .NET languages rather than using SQL stored procedures.
  • The SQL Anywhere Replication Agent is available as a separate license to allow SQL Anywhere to participate in Replication Server setups.
  • The High Availability Option is available as a separate license to implement high availability should the computer running the SQL Anywhere Server fail.
