Keeping track of all your models in all their different states can be a complex and challenging experience. You may have some models representing an “In Development” state, while others are “In Testing” or “In Production”. PowerDesigner introduced a whole new way to handle that through the Repository – the new Branch Management. While we had a concept for branching a Repository before, this approach takes it to the next level, by allowing each project or folder the ability to branch within the Repository, and view all branches at once.
PowerDesigner 16.1’s new Branch Management will support:
- Visibility to all branches of a project or folder, and the model versions within them, for easy understanding and management of all model versions at all stages of the modeling to implementation lifecycle. This will reduce effort to manage all these different models, reduce errors in integrating changes between lifecycle stages, and increase collaboration between all stakeholders working together.
- Security at the Branch level – users will only see the branches they should and change the branches they are responsible for, improving ease of use and management without sacrificing capability.
- Easy integration between branches making all work done for any branch conditionally available to any other branch saving significant time and effort in ensuring transition between phases of the modeling and implementation lifecycle
PowerDesigner V16.1 is available for trial now if you are not already using this version.
David Norfolk and Philip Howard, of Bloor Research, recently wrote about IA and why is it valuable. A key takeaway for CEG has been a movement from an environment where all systems were documented in its code to an environment that uses PowerDesigner to manage the architecture to drive the development of systems.
