Dear Valued Customer,

In March 2013, SAP released SAP Sybase IQ 16 – the biggest release in the product's history with an array of innovative features for Extremely Large Database (XLDB) analytics.  SAP Sybase IQ has long addressed the challenges of big data in terms of very large data sets, complex analytics, large number of users, near real-time analytics, and support for both structured and unstructured data.  SAP Sybase IQ 16 introduced new capabilities to handle the ever increasing volume, velocity, variety and value of data with high speed data loading, improved query scalability, enhanced security, and heightened availability.

Feature Description
Re-engineered column store The SAP Sybase IQ column store was originally designed for terabyte sized data sets, but not the new XLDB petabyte scale data. The column store has been re-architected to accommodate larger data volumes comprising greater proportions of variable sized data with superior compression.
High performance, fully parallel bulk loading The SAP Sybase IQ bulk loader has been restructured to remove inefficiencies and bottlenecks. The bulk loader can now fully utilize the CPU cores on the SAP Sybase IQ server for productive work. Some of our beta customers have experienced greater than 10x bulk load performance improvements!
Tiered indexing for consistent, incremental batch loads The SAP Sybase IQ High Group index – a metadata rich index that optimizes data access for queries – has been redesigned as a tiered structure to allow incremental batch loads to execute with consistent performance as table sizes grow.
Write optimized delta store SAP Sybase IQ was built for analytics, and read-intensive workloads. In today's world of big data velocity, multiple streams of data need to be ingested and made available in near real-time to information consumers. SAP Sybase IQ has incorporated a write-optimized in memory store that allows multiple writers to write data to the same database table concurrently with high performance.
Scaled out query processing with hash partitioned tables and data affinity SAP Sybase IQ's query optimizer advanced in SAP Sybase IQ 15.3 to distribute queries across an SAP Sybase IQ Multiplex grid. SAP Sybase IQ 16 brings added intelligence to distributed query processing with data affinity. The loading engine can now create hash partitioned tables that pre-partition data in advance of query execution. As queries execute, hash partitions are loaded into cache, and the query optimizer tracks cache contents, and distributes work to the node where data already resides. Caches stay "hot", and query performance high.
More resilient Multiplex grid The Multiplex grid is now resilient to network interrupts and SAP Sybase IQ server restarts. Queries now suspend and resume, rather than rolling back, when encountering a temporary interruption of system services.
Improved security SAP Sybase IQ 16 brings popular LDAP authentication support, and role-based access control (RBAC) for the granular data access control required by today's security conscious organizations.
Web-based monitoring and adminstration Sybase Control Center (SCC) has become the sole and comprehensive administration and monitoring facility for SAP Sybase IQ. SCC is completely web-based and scalable to monitor large networks of SAP Sybase IQ (and other Sybase technology) servers.

Along with its new features, SAP Sybase IQ 16 is also introducing a new release model.  Within the SAP Sybase IQ 12 and 15 release families, SAP Sybase IQ released minor versions of the product – e.g., 12.7, 15.1 which incorporated new features.  Defect fixes were packaged into interim ESDs (electronic software distributions) that included defect fixes, but no new features.  Beginning with SAP Sybase IQ 16, SAP is adopting a new release strategy.  Each release will be identified as a "support package", and will include both defect fixes and new features.  The first support package for SAP Sybase IQ 16 – SP1 - was released in May 2013.  SAP Sybase IQ 16 SP2 will be released in November 2013.  And we have plans for continued innovations in SAP Sybase IQ 16 beyond that!

Now that SAP Sybase IQ 16 is available, we encourage those of you who are current SAP Sybase IQ 12.x and 15.x customers to begin planning your migration to SAP Sybase IQ 16 SP1 (support package 1) as soon as possible.  The localized version of SAP Sybase IQ 16 will be released as SP2 in November 2013, so Chinese and Japanese language customers should migrate when that support package becomes available.

This letter also serves as notification of the upcoming end of mainstream maintenance dates for the SAP Sybase IQ 15.x versions, to assist you with your migration planning

Under Sybase policy, the SAP Sybase IQ team provided support for the current major version, and the last point release of the previous major version for a period of three years from the GA date of the current major version.  When a point release became available, we asked customers to migrate to that release, and provided new defect fixes as ESDs on top of the latest point release only.  This strategy has not always been practical for some customers, however, who often spend significant time testing their applications on a new SAP Sybase IQ release.  To ease the transition to SAP Sybase IQ 16, we are extending support of two popular minor releases – 15.2 and 15.3 – to accommodate customers who need additional time to migrate.  Below is the end of mainstream support timeline for the SAP Sybase IQ 15 family:

Version Platform Language GA date End of sale End of
Mainstream Maintenance
15 All All Mar 31, 2009 Jul 31, 2009 Jul 31, 2013
15.1 All All Jul 31, 2009 Jun 30, 2010 Jul 31, 2013
15.2 All All Jun 30, 2010 Jun 30, 2011 Jul 31, 2014
15.3 All All Jun 30, 2011 Nov 30, 2011 Jan 31, 2014
15.4 All All Nov 30, 2011 Nov 30, 2013 Jul 31, 2016

Now that Sybase has merged with SAP, SAP Sybase IQ 16 and forthcoming support packages will adopt the standard SAP end of mainstream maintenance policy – 2 years from release date.  That policy is outlined here:

SAP encourages you to begin migration plans as soon as possible to upgrade your software before the end of mainstream maintenance. Please consult the "Migration Information" section of the SAP Sybase IQ 16 user documentation for additional information that may be pertinent to your migration.

Technical support and customer service for these releases is not ending.  Although we will no longer provide software updates to a release once engineering support has ended, we will continue to support customers with active support agreements, by providing workarounds and root cause analysis to the best of our ability. We will provide ongoing telephone and electronic assistance, as well as migration advice on upgrading to SAP supported products. Except for already committed fixes in queue, this assistance does not include engineering support, new bug fixes, or integration of bug fixes into previous updates.

If you have any questions, please call your local SAP Technical Support Center.  One of our Customer Service representatives will respond to your questions or direct your call to someone who can.

Thank you for your cooperation in this product transition.  We are very excited about the recent SAP Sybase IQ 16 product release and look forward to helping you deploy and get the most out of it.
