ASE 15 - Migration Strategy

Databases are a core component of an enterprise’s technology infrastructure. Substantial changes, such as migrations or upgrades, provide significant opportunities, but may also introduce considerable risk. To help customers capitalize on the new version of Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) and mitigate migration’s inherent risks, Sybase offers the ASE 15 Migration Strategy Service – a short-term consulting package that provides a structured methodology for itemizing the risks and the opportunities created by the migration. Sybase consultants will analyze both the database server and the wider ecosystem components that may be impacted.

The service is delivered in a workshop format moderated by a skilled Sybase architect. Subject-matter experts also provide significant input on the environment to be migrated.

Sybase consultants possess comprehensive domain experience and have access to a large knowledge base. They have vast experience conducting ASE migrations, which allows them to arrive at a qualified assessment of the tasks at hand. The findings are presented in two deliverables - a high-level Migration Project Plan and a Migration Plan document that provides the basis for a detailed risk mitigation and opportunity maximization strategy.

Objectives
Beginning the migration with a plan already in place lets you run an effective project that minimizes disruptions - the infamous migration surprises - and give you accurate information to set project timelines and effectively budget and schedule for resources. The key tasks required to prepare a thorough plan for the migration of ASE 15 include:

  • Identifying the migration’s critical success factors and the strategies to achieve them
  • Reviewing the database server and its ecosystem from the bottom-up. The components reviewed include the:
    • Operating system
    • I/O subsystem
    • Dataserver
    • Databases and objects within them
    • Integration technologies
    • Applications
    • Scripts and procedures that work with the current ASE environment.
  • Preparing a high-level migration plan document

Delivery Tasks
This service requires considerable participation from the customer, both at the management and operational levels. The following table shows some of the tasks that your enterprise will need to be involved with:

Task Detail
Customer Questionnaire Customer completes a questionnaire prior to the Sybase-led workshop that is used to validate the scope of the environment as well as the feasibility of conducting the one-week planning session. Gathering this data prior to being onsite allows consultants to prepare and ensures customer readiness to participate in the weeklong workshop.
Meeting with Project Sponsor and Team A kick-off meeting to confirm and emphasize the critical success factors of the migration effort.
Workshop Meetings The workshop style meetings will be essential for consulting staff to understand and clarify details of the environment.
Review Meetings Meetings for consulting staff to present artifacts being prepared and obtain customer input.
Project Completion Meeting The consulting staff member will meet with the migration project sponsor to submit the plan. Typically includes a substantial Q&A session.
