Objectives
The HealthCheck for Sybase IQ Service Package is designed to assess the architecture, configuration and operating environment of your Sybase IQ deployment—ensuring that your system is delivering the maximum query performance and storage efficiency possible.
Working closely with customer staff, the Sybase consultant will conduct a comprehensive HealthCheck of your software environment and production systems; providing a written assessment as to how it is performing, identifying potential limitations and documenting recommendations to improve and optimize your investment.
- Phase 1 includes the review of your Sybase IQ architecture, configuration, infrastructure and performance issues.
- Phase 2 includes a detailed analysis of the Sybase IQ environment, system testing and review—resulting in documented findings and recommendations.
- Phases 3 and 4 are optional phases of effort to implement a portion or all of the documented recommendations.
High-Level Activities
- Review of your current environment—including hardware, operating system, Sybase software components and current Sybase IQ configuration
- Memory sizing review for IQ—including optimal memory models for both query and load
- Review of IQ indexing for columns and tables
- Review major load and batch processes in IQ
- Test of CPU utilization
- Investigate multiplex environment (where relevant)
- Identify and discuss advanced product features that may be under utilized, as well as their business benefits
- Investigate third party compatibility or performance issues (i.e. front end reporting tools)
- Provide mentorship to your DBA staff in the areas of performance and tuning and knowledge transfer of best practices for Sybase IQ implementations
- Document findings and provide a roadmap for implementing recommendations

Phase 1:
System Architecture and Configuration Review
|
Sybase staff will conduct a review of the Sybase IQ architecture and assess the detailed configuration of the infrastructure related to:
- Physical Data Model (including indexes and column cardinality)
- Operating system, patch levels and kernel settings
- Current hardware and upgrade plans
- Current Sybase IQ version and patch levels
- Sybase IQ configuration environment
- Storage configuration
- Network considerations
- Operational procedures
- Performance metrics from loading data into Sybase IQ
- Schema Management procedure
- IQ Utilities—IQ buffer cache monitor for each main and private cache

Phase 2: Detailed Evaluation of Sybase IQ Environment
|
Based on data obtained from utilities in Phase 1 and the Sybase consultant's toolkit, an evaluation of the Sybase IQ environment will be performed to ensure resources are efficiently utilized. Detailed findings and recommendations will be documented and validated with the project stakeholders.

Partial Implementation (Optional)

During this phase some of the more urgent recommendations made in the initial phases will be implemented either in the production or test system.
